Santa needs your help!

Welwyn Round Table has been driving Father Christmas around Welwyn collecting donations for local charities for about 40 years. Unfortunately over the years membership of the group has dwindled and now they are unable to put on Santa with his sleigh for the parish.

The sleigh run runs for 6 consecutive evenings at the beginning of December and requires the float, a driver, Father Christmas and a minimum of 8 collectors. If you would be willing to volunteer and keep this traditional event  alive for the children of your parish please contact Malcolm Temple at malcolmtemple@hotmail.com

Funding to implement road safety recommendations

Hertfordshire County Council E-petition –  funding to implement road safety recommendations on B197 near Oaklands Primary School (Oaklands). We need you to sign the above e-petition in support of the urgent implementation of the AECOM (Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Operations and Management independent consultancy) road safety recommendations for the B197 near Oaklands Primary School (Oaklands). Implementing AECOM’s low to medium cost recommendations alone would help to improve road safety near Oaklands Primary School by reducing traffic speeds from the current 40 mph to at most 30 mph.

Following concerns raised about road safety on the B197, in 2017 a petition was signed by 353 concerned parents and local residents and led to a road safety study by AECOM which made a number of recommendations that were aimed at reducing the serious road risks to school children at Oaklands Primary School (and St. Michael’s Primary School in Woolmer Green as well as other vulnerable local people).

These recommendations, made in May 2018, have yet to be implemented. A funding application has been submitted to carry out the works and we urge for a successful outcome.

To find out more information and sign the e-petition please visit https://democracy.hertfordshire.gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?id=53

A1(M) junction 6 to junction 3 smart motorway update from Highways England

highways England are currently developing the detailed design for a smart motorway between A1(M) junctions 6 and 8.

This scheme will be “All Lane Running”. This means that the hard shoulder will be converted into a permanent running lane for drivers to help reduce congestion and variable speed limits will be used to smooth traffic flow. The new scheme will mean drivers will benefit from a three-lane motorway between junction 3 (Hatfield) and junction 9 (Baldock / Letchworth).

Work on the A1(M) J6-8 will start in March 2020. The existing hard shoulder will be strengthened so t two lanes can be kept open for traffic when work starts on the central reservation, minimising disruption for road users as much as possible.

Work starting March 2020 will include:

  • detailed design development
  • strengthening the hard shoulder
  • structural survey work
  • site clearance, including vegetation on the verge
  • detailed topography, drainage and road surface surveys
  • installing new gantry structures to display overhead electronic message signs
  • installing CCTV cameras with full coverage of all the lanes
  • installing incident detection and automatic sign systems
  • installing enforcement cameras
  • installing emergency roadside telephones
  • installing electronic signals and signage
  • constructing emergency areas (identifiable by orange road surfaces), with distinctive advanced signs
  • upgrading central reservation by installing rigid concrete barrier
  • laying low-noise road surface
  • replanting the verges
